THE PLUME ON A CIGAR IS A GOOD THING

Ever opened your humidor and noticed a fine white dust on your cigar? Don’t panic it might be plume, not mold.

Plume (also called “bloom”) happens when the natural oils from the tobacco rise to the surface during aging and crystallize. It appears as a light, powdery coating and can be gently wiped off without damaging the wrapper.

Unlike mold, plume is harmless and many aficionados actually see it as a sign that a cigar has been properly aged and stored. Mold, on the other hand, usually looks fuzzy or web-like and won’t wipe off cleanly.

It’s one of those subtle details that shows how cigars are a living, breathing product constantly evolving inside your humidor.
