The Book That Named a Cigar

One of the most famous cigars in the world was named after a novel being read inside a cigar factory.

This week we’re covering standout smokes recommended by Cigar Aficionado, a new Havana–Miami collection from the OpusX Society, and Casa Carrillo’s upcoming Deep Blue limited release. We’re also spotlighting boutique powerhouse Foundation Cigar Company and breaking down the surprising literary origin behind the Montecristo name.

THE STORY THAT INSPIRED A BRAND NAME

One of the most famous cigar brands in the world, Montecristo, actually got its name from a book being read inside a cigar factory.

In the 1930s at a factory in Havana, Cuba, cigar rollers would listen to a lector a reader who entertained workers by reading novels aloud during the workday. One of the most popular stories among the rollers was “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas. The workers loved the story so much that when a new cigar brand was created in 1935, they named it Montecristo in honor of the novel that had captivated the factory floor.

To this day, the Montecristo logo still reflects that literary inspiration, featuring crossed swords inspired by the novel’s themes of adventure and revenge.

🔥 Pretty cool that one of the world’s most famous cigars was named after a story. What cigar name has the coolest backstory in your opinion?

The Intemperance line of cigars from Mike Rosales and Skip Martin of RoMa Craft Tabac is a stogie with a message. Taking artwork from the bootleggers of the 1920’s, Intemperance reminds us that the anti-cigar movement is alive and strong, and that it’s time for us to rise up together again. It’s a great message, and one we can all get behind.
