Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

Cuba Once Had a Cigar-Themed Lottery

In the early 1900s, Cuba was so proud of its cigar industry that it created a national lottery featuring cigar box inserts as winning tickets!

Here’s how it worked: Popular cigar brands would include small collectible cards inside their boxes—much like baseball cards in the U.S.—but some of these inserts doubled as lottery entries. If your insert had a winning number, you could redeem it for cash or prizes through official government-run drawings.

This brilliant idea not only boosted cigar sales, but also made opening a fresh box of Cuban cigars even more exciting. Imagine lighting up a stick and finding out you just won the lottery!

While the practice was eventually discontinued, those vintage inserts are now highly collectible, and some still feature the original lottery numbers printed on them—a fascinating intersection of tobacco, history, and a little bit of luck.

🔥 If cigar boxes still came with lottery tickets, how many would you be buying a week? Let us know!
