The Cigar Box Guitar Was Born Out of the Blues
Did you know that cigar boxes helped invent American music history?
In the mid-1800s, during tough economic times, people who couldn’t afford traditional instruments began building their own often using empty cigar boxes as the body for homemade guitars and banjos.
These DIY instruments became a staple of early blues, folk, and jug band music, especially in the American South. Artists used broomsticks for necks, wire or screen for strings, and a whole lot of creativity.
Even today, the cigar box guitar lives on, with musicians and hobbyists around the world building and playing them as a tribute to raw, rootsy sound. Some famous blues players even got their start on one!
