President Ulysses S. Grant was not only a Civil War hero he was also a serious cigar lover, reportedly smoking up to 20 cigars a day during his presidency.

After a victorious battle in the Civil War, grateful supporters sent him over 10,000 cigars as gifts. It’s widely believed that Grant was the first president to regularly smoke cigars in the White House, turning the executive mansion into one of the most smoke-filled homes in the country at the time.

His love for cigars became so well known that political cartoons often showed him with a stogie in hand and it even helped define his calm, steady image during turbulent times.
