Six Generations of Tobacco Mastery

Plasencia is more than just a brand — it’s a dynasty. Today, they stand as one of the largest and most respected tobacco growers in Central America.

Seed to Smoke

Plasencia controls every step of the process, from planting the seed to aging the finished cigars. This vertical integration means unmatched consistency and craftsmanship. Their blends showcase the richness of Nicaraguan and Honduran soils, bringing smokers deep complexity, creamy texture, and signature Plasencia sweetness and spice.

Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

The Secret Behind Cigar Factory “Lectores”

One of the most fascinating traditions in cigar culture is the lector — the person who sits at the front of a cigar factory and reads aloud to the workers as they roll cigars.

This custom started in Cuba in the mid-1800s, when cigar rollers — called torcedores — wanted to break the monotony of long hours at the rolling table. Since many workers were illiterate, they pooled money to hire someone to read to them. The lector didn’t just read newspapers; they’d narrate classic novels, political writings, and poetry, turning the factory floor into a place of both craftsmanship and education.

This tradition didn’t just pass the time — it shaped the social and political awareness of the workers. Many factories were hotbeds for revolutionary ideas. Some cigar brands are even named after stories that were popularized by lectores — like Montecristo, inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo, a novel that captivated rollers when it was read aloud.

Today, while modern machinery has replaced some hand rolling, a few traditional factories in Cuba and the Dominican Republic still keep lectores as a nod to the craft’s rich cultural roots — preserving a piece of history that shows cigars have always been about more than just tobacco and smoke.
