Cigar Smoking Helped Shape the U.S. Capitol
Here’s one you probably didn’t expect! Cigar smoke once filled the halls of Congress!
In the 1800s and early 1900s, it was completely normal for U.S. Senators and Representatives to smoke cigars right at their desks inside the Capitol building. In fact, the “smoke-filled room” became a common phrase to describe backdoor political negotiations where deals were made over cigars, not press conferences.
The term gained real traction during the 1920 Republican National Convention, when party leaders famously gathered in a literal smoke-filled room to choose Warren G. Harding as their presidential nominee.
Eventually, smoking was banned in most government buildings, but the legacy remains: cigars have long been a part of the power, pressure, and personality of American political history.
