Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

The Churchill Size: Named After a Legend

Have you ever wondered why there’s a cigar size called a “Churchill”? Well, you can thank Winston Churchill, Britain’s iconic wartime Prime Minister — and a man who rarely went anywhere without a cigar in hand.

Churchill was famous for his love of long, robust cigars. His favorites were usually Cuban Romeo y Julietas, which he smoked daily — sometimes up to ten a day! He even had special cigar cases made to keep them safe during air raids and diplomatic trips.

Because he was so rarely seen without one, cigar makers began referring to his preferred size as “the Churchill.” It stuck — and today, “Churchill” is an official cigar size: typically about 7 inches long with a 47-ring gauge. It’s become the go-to choice for smokers who want a long, leisurely session — a nod to the man who used cigars to steady his nerves during some of the world’s tensest moments.

In fact, Churchill loved cigars so much that when rationing threatened his supply during WWII, he pulled strings to make sure he never ran out — one of many perks of being the most powerful man in Britain at the time!

So, next time you light up a Churchill, remember: you’re not just smoking a cigar — you’re holding a little slice of history named for a leader who believed a good smoke could get you through just about anything.
