THE FOOT BAND WAS NOT ALWAYS A THING
Today, it’s common to see cigars with two bands — the main band and a smaller one near the foot. But foot bands are actually a relatively modern marketing invention.
For most of cigar history, cigars only had one band near the head. In the early 2000s, brands began adding foot bands to create more shelf appeal and help their cigars stand out in crowded humidors. The idea was simple: when cigars are displayed upright in boxes, the foot is what you see first.
But here’s the twist — foot bands also slightly slow the burn at the start because you have to remove them before lighting. Some smokers believe this helps preserve wrapper oils right up until the first toast.
Love them or hate them, foot bands are proof that even small details in the cigar world blend tradition and marketing in interesting ways.
