Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

The Term “Cigar Aficionado” Was Popularized by a Magazine

While people have enjoyed cigars for centuries, the phrase “cigar aficionado” wasn’t widely used until 1992, when Cigar Aficionado magazine launched and helped spark a modern cigar renaissance.

Founded by Marvin R. Shanken, the magazine blended cigar culture with luxury lifestyle content featuring interviews with celebrities, reviews of fine spirits, and glossy photo spreads of exotic destinations. The first issue featured Winston Churchill on the cover and was so successful it sold out almost immediately.

Soon after, cigars exploded in popularity throughout the 1990s, becoming synonymous with success, celebration, and class. Hollywood stars, athletes, and even politicians were photographed with cigars, and the term "aficionado" became part of the cultural lexicon elevating cigar smoking from a habit to a hobby and identity.

So if you proudly call yourself a cigar aficionado today, you’re carrying on a title that helped reintroduce cigars to a whole new generation.
