Some Cigar Makers "Listen" to Their Tobacco
In certain traditional cigar factories, especially in Cuba and Nicaragua, experienced blenders say they can “hear” when tobacco is ready.
No, it's not a mystical ritual. It’s the sound of fermentation. When tobacco leaves are stacked into large fermentation pilones (piles), they generate heat and moisture as they age. Skilled workers will press their ear close to the pile and listen for a faint crackling or sizzling sound, a sign that the fermentation is active and healthy.
If the pile goes silent, it might be a clue that it’s too dry or not fermenting properly. It’s just one of the many ways cigar making blends science, craftsmanship, and intuition and proves that sometimes, great cigars are made by more than just sight and touch.
