Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

The Cigar Industry Helped Popularize the 8-Hour Workday

In the late 1800s, cigar factory workers were among the first labor groups in America to demand better working conditions, and they played a key role in the fight for the 8-hour workday.

Many cigar rollers worked 10–12 hours a day in crowded factories. But because they were often highly skilled and organized, especially in cities like Tampa, Key West, and New York, they formed some of the earliest and most effective cigar worker unions.

These workers led strikes, organized protests, and pushed employers to adopt more humane hours—well before it became a national movement. In some areas, cigar unions even offered healthcare benefits, pensions, and paid time off, decades ahead of mainstream labor reforms.

So next time you light up, you’re not just enjoying craftsmanship—you’re celebrating a profession that helped reshape the modern workweek.
