Cigar Ash Was Once Used to Make Toothpaste
Yes, you read that right! In the 1700s and 1800s, cigar and pipe ash was sometimes used as an ingredient in homemade toothpaste!
Before modern dental hygiene products existed, people experimented with all kinds of abrasive substances to clean their teeth. One popular DIY mixture combined cigar or pipe ash with crushed charcoal, salt, and water to form a gritty paste. The ash helped scrub away plaque and stains though it was far from gentle on the enamel.
Some even believed that tobacco ash had antiseptic properties, although we now know that might’ve caused more harm than good. Still, it’s a quirky reminder of how far we’ve come and how cigars once played a role in routines far beyond the smoking lounge.
