Cigars Were Once Rolled by Revolutionaries
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many cigar factories in places like Key West, Tampa, and New York weren’t just centers of craftsmanship they were hotbeds of political activism.
Among the rollers were exiled Cuban revolutionaries who fled Spanish rule but continued organizing from abroad. These skilled torcedores would spend their days rolling cigars and their evenings printing underground newspapers, raising funds, and planning resistance efforts to fight for Cuban independence.
In fact, José Martí, Cuba’s national hero, gave some of his most famous speeches in cigar factories rallying workers and building support for the revolution.
