The World’s Oldest Cigar Was Over 600 Years Old

In 2012, archaeologists in Guatemala made a surprising discovery: a 600-year-old cigar, perfectly preserved in a clay pot!

The cigar was found in a Mayan burial site, and what amazed researchers was how closely it resembled modern cigars hand-rolled tobacco wrapped in a leaf, stored carefully to maintain its shape and integrity. It’s believed that the Mayans were among the first to roll and smoke tobacco, using it not just for pleasure, but for spiritual and ceremonial purposes.

Even more interesting? The ancient cigar still had a faint tobacco aroma, despite being centuries old. It’s currently preserved in a climate-controlled display case at the Museo del Tabaco in Guatemala, serving as a time capsule that shows just how deep cigar culture runs through human history.
